Herbicide Tips for Railways

When and What Herbicides to Use Around Railways

Print page

An integrated vegetation management program is the best way to control weeds and keep railways safe. Chemical solutions tend to be more cost-efficient in the long-term, help promote healthier ecosystems by eliminating invasive plants, and minimize risk by reducing the amount of time workers must be on site to mechanically remove vegetation.

However, when it comes to deciding which herbicides to use and how to use them, there are many options. Don’t get lost in the weeds — see our tips and recommendations for when to use what herbicides.

Around Bareground Areas: Plainview® SC

Having clean, bareground areas around railyards is very important. To keep these areas clear of weeds with three active ingredients in one jug, consider using Plainview SC liquid bareground solution. Plainview SC provides long-residual and broad-spectrum control of annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and grasses. It can even help manage difficult-to-control weeds while improving applicator efficiency.

Rock Ballast Areas: Esplanade® 200 SC + Method® 240SL

For these areas, we recommend both Esplanade 200 SC and Method 240SL. This combination delivers both pre and postemergence control of many broadleaf weeds and grasses. Fall timing of application is best. Just one application can provide long lasting results. Add a tank mix partner of Roundup Custom and surfactant for best results.

All-Around Coverage: Method® 240SL

Every climate, region and operation faces unique challenges when it comes to spray programs. We recommend Method 240SL for a strong foundational herbicide. Method 240SL offers both pre and post emerge control of broadleaf weeds and post emerge control of many brush species so vegetation managers can be flexible in spraying and custom blending. It can be used in bareground and brush control areas. This foundational herbicide helps to simplify spraying and can save time and money. Always read and follow label directions around brush control including consideration of sensitive plants adjacent to railroad areas.
