Backslope Brush

A Long-Term Approach for Maintaining Backslope Areas

Manage Highway Backslope Vegetation With Method® 240SL Herbicide and Escort® XP Herbicide

Print page

When it comes to maintaining backslope areas, mowing is often the go-to option; however, this only provides a temporary height regulation. But with the risks to both roadside crews and motorists, there are better options for controlling highway vegetation than mowing alone.

Using individual plant treatment (IPT) methods with selective herbicides, like Method® 240SL herbicide and Escort® XP herbicide, controlling incompatible trees and brush on backslopes helps to promote an early successional habitat beneficial to pollinator species. When IPT treatments are used on back slopes in combination with mowing adjacent to roadways, they help reduce risks for crews as well as save time and money. When a combined approach is used, herbicides can promote a better environment for native highway vegetation to grow on backslope areas and it is an indicator of a successful management prescription.

Take Back Your Roadsides With Method 240SL and Escort XP

Method 240SL is a preemergence and postemergence herbicide that controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds, vines and brush species, including many that are listed as noxious or invasive. As a foundational herbicide for tree and brush control, Method 240SL can be combined with other products, like Escort XP, to broaden the spectrum of species controlled and more precisely meet the needs of your operation.

Escort XP is another selective herbicide used to control problematic trees, brush and weeds on backslope sites with excellent selectivity to certain native grass species.

How To Apply

Method 240SL

// Apply as a foliar spray using either low-volume backpack applications or high-volume handgun applications with ground spray equipment. For control of trees and brush species, use Method 240SL at rates of 10 to 18 fluid ounces per acre. Spray volumes should be selected in order to provide uniform and complete coverage of the target plants.

// For full application instructions, including product mixing rates by volume, see the product label.

Escort XP

// Apply to the leaves of plants you want to control using ground equipment, including backpack applications for smaller brush with lower water volumes or handgun applications for larger brush and higher water volumes. The use rate depends upon the tree, brush or weed species at your specific site.

// For full application instructions, see the product label.

Application Window

Method 240SL

// Can be used year-round depending on type of application.

// See product label for specific instructions on foliar, cut stump/stem and basal bark treatments.

Escort XP

// Make a foliar application of the specified rate of Escort XP during the period of full leaf expansion in the spring until the development of full fall coloration on deciduous species to be controlled. Coniferous species may be treated anytime during the growing season.

Benefits

Method 240SL

// Reduced time managing backslope areas.

// Versatility of products like Method 240SL used in bareground, selective weeding, invasive, foliar brush, cut stubble, basal, cut stump, and hack and squirt applications.

// Accuracy and flexibility in spraying using custom blending technology specific to brush and tree species present on your site.

// Promotion of pollinator habitats on backslopes.

Escort XP

// Recognized for its low use rates, Escort XP reduces the chemical load on treated acres without compromising weed tree, brush and weed control.

// It is selective, so it will not harm certain desirable grasses.

// It is flexible, so it can be tank-mixed to broaden the weed control spectrum.

A Combined Approach for a Winning Result

Incorporating herbicides for selective tree and brush control into your roadside vegetation management program can help you save money and resources and lower risks to roadside crews. It’s also beneficial to several bird species and promotes strong pollinator habitats. Overall, it’s the best approach to managing backslope areas.
