Trial Results Demonstrate the Application Flexibility of Kontos

Print page

Kontos is a truly systemic insecticide, meaning that the active ingredient, spirotetramat, moves both upwards (xylem) and downwards (phloem) in the plant. To this point, results from research at the University of Hawaii indicate that foliar applications of Kontos are as effective as drench applications of Kontos or Safar for control of root mealybugs (Rhizoecus spp.) on containerized bird catcher trees in the greenhouse.

Another trial on containerized Rhapis palms shows how drench or foliar applications of Kontos can be used to control pre-existing infestations of root mealybugs. These results demonstrate the application flexibility of Kontos and how it can be applied as a drench or as a foliar spray over a dense plant canopy to control pests attacking the roots. Kontos is a lipid synthesis inhibitor in IRAC group 23. Its mode of action is unique-affecting mostly the immature stages of insect pests and mites after they feed on treated plant tissues – and has minimal contact activity. This characteristic allows for Kontos to be rotated with many other products as well as beneficial insects used for integrated pest management (IPM), such as some parasitic wasps, predatory beetles, bugs and flies.
